*Ruth Benedict wrote this is in her journal when she found out that she was infertile. She never had children. But, like many mothers, she wanted more for her (imagined) children than she did for herself. Childless, she gave herself permission to achieve her greatest ambitions and dreams. And she did. She went on to become one of the century's greatest anthropologists. What dreams have you put on hold? Is it time to reclaim them?

What's yours Margaret?
One of the reasons I like this quote so much, is because there was a time when I used to believe that my children would be just like me, but much better. When I began to realize that my children are lovely, wonderful people, but not like me at all, it helped me remember that my dreams belonged to me, and I had to live my dreams myself, which is much healthier for all of us. I think my transition from serious, analytical writing to fiction is a result of this. Now if I can just get my novel published...

This is a post that resonates with me. I might add that sometimes you have to lower the ambitions of one dream to give another dream a fighting chance.
