Wise Women Friday: Isak Dinesen

Words of Wisdom from Danish Writer Isak Dinesen (1885-1962):

God made the world round so we would never be able to see too far down the road.

I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read anything by Isak Denisen, although I like the movie "Out of Africa," which is based on her work.

Still, I like this quote, especially as we think about the new year and new beginnings.  Where will they lead?  How will they turn out?  When my imagination takes me down these roads, things almost always end badly.  I envision the worst: people I love die or get hurt, I die or get hurt.  It's never pretty.  Best not to wander at all, quite frankly.  Best to stay in the here and now.  And that's what Dinesen reminds us.  We don't know where our story is headed -- we can't see that far down the road.  So instead of scanning the horizon, check out the scenery and enjoy the local environs.  They'll be gone soon enough; what a shame it would be to miss them.

Love the quote by Dinesen and love your quote:
They'll be gone soon enough; what a shame it would be to miss them.

don't allow your imagination to just focus on nightmarish futures. no need to even imagine that.

dare to plant a couple of beautiful dreams in your future, like having your happiest new year. a dream I share with you.

You can happen upon the juiciest quotes. And you must read Dinesen, particularly Winter's Tales. I'll see if I can dig up my copy. (I never read Babette's Feast, but it is one of my favorite movies.)

As soon as I read your quote I started hearing the film score from "Out of Africa". I've not read anything by her either but I love those black and white photos of her as an elderly woman.
I've linked back to you on todays post.

Such a lovely quote, and a good reminder not to get ahead of myself.

You've reminded me of a note I keep in my datebook:

Feel grateful now.
Choose what you want without attachment. Feel as if it's already achieved.
Act on opportunities and intuitions. (Pay attention.)

It's part affirmation, part reminder to think positive.

I haven't read any Dinesen either. Bad.

That's all right you haven't read Dineson, Petrea. Just feel like you already did.

Thanks Karin. At least I'm in good company.

AH: Now I am determined. I will read Dinesen, if only because Babette's Feast is one of my favorite movies. I had no idea it was based on her work.

Petrea: Love the note you keep to yourself. I especially love the "pay attention" part. I'm working on that myself.

PA: I feel so honored to have inspired. And poor Ganesh. He really does have a bad time of things here in the west. But that tattoo is spectacular, and seems not at all disrespectful. Unlike the float. Ugh.

Love the Out of Africa book Isak Dineson wrote. Also have her Letters from Africa , which has been on my shelf long enough for me to wonder if I actually read them, or some or all of them. Probably at least some of them.

Seriously, I recommend reading Out of Africa.

I'd like to find the book of stories that contains her rendition of what eventually became the movie, Babette's Feast.

Susan K: Thanks for the recommendation. I will try to get some Dineson when I'm at the library today!
