Goddess of the Week: Estsanatlehi

Different kinds of outer diapers. Baby diapers.Image via Wikipedia

No one said change was easy. No one said moving from one stage of life to the next was ice cream, daisies, and cute little puppies licking your face. No. Change is a difficult business right from the get go and it only gets harder as we age.

Of course, there are always people who make it look easy. I know a mom whose babies slept through the night at five weeks and potty-trained at twelve months. This same mom could parachute her children into Russia and they would probably be the happiest, most popular kids in the country within a week. They make change look easy. I think I kind of hate them.

Not so lucky yourself? Does your little one cling to that diaper like its money in the bank? Is she really not ready to give up being a toddler? Or what about you? Are you holding back from pursuing that new hair cut/career/relationship because change seems ominous? Then the goddess you must channel is Estsanatlehi.

Estsanatlehi is the Navajo goddess of change. A symbol of the seasons, she grows old each winter and turns young again each spring. She is the mother of creation. When she was lonely, she fashioned humans out of her own skin. She reminds us that permanence is not an option. We grow, we age, we change. That's what we do. Sometimes we need a bit of a push. Sometimes we need to give that push. But always, Estsanatlehi is there to help. She reminds us that in every stage of life there is a spring, a summer, a fall, and a winter, and at the end of each winter there is a new, glorious spring. So go ahead. Take a leap: The new grass will soften your landing.

Channel this goddess: when change lands, uninvited, on your doorstep or when you know it's time to make a change. Change happens. Guaranteed. Might as well get with the program.

Laurie: This one is for you and little bit.

Need a goddess? Tell me your need and I will find the perfect goddess for you.

Margaret, I love this! Your goddess posts are fab.

Cafe, you made me laugh out loud.

Um. . . Does Laurie have an announcement?

Margaret said...

Pup: Of course, you are always right.

Petrea: Thanks.

Susan: I don't think so. She has a toddler struggling to move on, diaper wise.

Love that lay-down art. Did you put that together FBA?

Here's what I figure: Little Bit will know when she's good and ready, and probably won't entertain the alternative prior to that moment.

JCK said...

I need her. Yes, I do. Thank you for sharing her with us. :)

I thought the last goddess needed a nickname. Some of us really need help with change; she sounds like a gal for our times.

Margaret, I just love you! Next time I'm struggling with Little Bit about the potty, I'm calling on Estsanatlehi to help. That is, if I can remember her name...

(And Susan, God no... no announcement!)

We could perhaps call her Esty except that it seems disrespectful to shorten such magnificence, not to mention it could cause confusion with the online home of all things knitty and crafty.

Estsanatlehi {thank heavens for copy and paste} is good. I know I need to embrace her more. Thanks for another fine goddess for the collection, Margaret!

I crave change when I can create it and control it. For the rest of the time, Etssanatlehi will come in mighty handy.

Margaret said...

AH: FBA?

JCK: Big changes approaching?

Jean: I know. The names are impossible. In this case, she's often just called the goddess of change because her name is crazy unpronounceable.

Laurie: Good luck, but AH is probably right too.

Shell: Yes, we don't want to confuse the crafters out there.

Susan: Even if you create change, can you really control it?

How true! Change is hard. I try to remember that the Goddess is constantly evolving through her three phases, Maiden, Mother, and Crone every moment of every day. If she can do it, so can I.

I absolutely agree with you...about change. I for one is having difficulty after changing careers from an accountant to a nurse... Great blog. love it!I could really use a goddess who could help me my future partner. :)

Nah, in Russia those parachuted kids won't do it.

Even those who are briefly acquainted with stereotypes know Russians hate everyone parachuted especially potty-trained kids.

Any parachuted kids probably would be eaten by evil Russians long before they reach the evil Russian land.

Great post. I constantly struggle with the idea of change because I know that so often it is needed and is for the better, but I also fight it sometimes with a great fervor. What is the deal with that? Yet another tale of the heart and the head not working in sync.

Seems a bit like the Greek goddess Ceres (or was it the Roman?)

Wow! It's my first visit here and I'm liking this a lot!I'd thought I was old fashioned to be living in the world of epics and all those ancient gods and demons- you changed that perception-Thanks!

This is so cute! I love your blog title- it's clever. How do you get so many followers? I'm a teacher by profession, but a writer by passion, (although my writings are usually rants). I'm always interested in how one becomes a successful writer. Seems like a hard business to break into.

Darcy said...

THIS IS MY GODDESS!!!! I need her now for sure! Thank you. I love your writing by the way!

Margaret said...

Lauren:

Regarding the blog -- the Blog of note thing made all the difference. As for writing, it is a matter of persistence and stupidity, but we write because we have stories to tell, right? It's not really a choice.
