Goddess of the Week: Diana

This blog is going to the dogs. Seriously. Because as Daisy notes, even pups need a goddess, especially those canines who've lived on the streets, eaten from trash cans and spent time in the slammer. Like this beauty right here:

For dogs and the dog people who love them, the goddess to honor is Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt.

The Diana of VersaillesImage via Wikipedia

Diana had a pack of fifty hounds and fifty fleet-footed nymphs to do her bidding and keep her company. Despite being an awesome hunter and killer archer, she was actually a very modest and private goddess. She never married and she tried not to get involved in the messy politics of Olympus. Diana was nobody's marshmallow, however. Just ask Acteon.

Acteon was a hunter. One day, he was hunting in the woods with his own pack of dogs. He accidently spied Diana bathing in a nearby lake. Bad. Bad. Bad. You do not want to peek at a goddess in her skivvies. Nothing good will come of it. To avenge this assault on her privacy she turned Acteon into a stag, whereupon he was killed and devoured by his own dogs. The lesson here being: be careful what you train your dog to do. At my home, we're pretty content with "sit" and "stay."

Channel this goddess: When squirrels run by and when cats taunt you because they totally know you're on a leash. Damn felines. Or, if you, a mere person, have the privilege of caring for a dog, or even a pack of dogs. If you do have this honor, you no doubt know how lucky you already are. Just thank Diana.

Daisy: This one's for you.

Need a goddess? Tell me what your need is and I'll find the goddess for you to channel.

Daisy! Lucky dog to have her own goddess! "Very modest and private" How perfectly apt, and yet this is the first time I've heard Diana described in those terms. Terrific, once again

Dez: Every dog deserves her goddess.

Daisy: Glad you approve! Scout approves too.

No, no, this one's mine I tell you. (There's a gorgeous statue of Diana at the Huntington. Maybe P has a picture.)

Daisy is a lucky dog to have such history going on here. Even my feline enjoyed this tale ;)

Margaret said...

AH: You can have her too.

Joanne: No offense to felines intended. But if your cat needs a goddess it needs Bast, the Egyptian goddess with the head of a cat and who is often associated with play.

Margaret and Joanne, thou art confused! Cats don't NEED a goddess... they ARE the gods and goddesses!

I know my place! ;-)

Daisy: I stand corrected. The cute pup in the post is my own pup, Scout.

Your blog is going to the dogs. Terrific take on Diana--and a fine lesson in being careful what you train your dogs to do.

WV: outhwe Outhwe it's hot; in here, it's kinda hot, too. Actually, it's too darned hot--and it's just July.

I need a goddess. I am 51, 2 boys just left home, one came back. Dad came to visit and stayed, he has dementia, thinks I am holding him prisoner, when in fact it is I whom is imprisoned. In a southern rural farmhouse with no dishwasher. Have to stay up all night to prevent unauthorized cooking. I used to be a chemist, now I just mostly flounder. I grow moss, and try to make or invent things for use by others, but there are no others....

that should keep you busy for a while.

We're a feline household but love puppy dogs too! {Hubby would like one but he's fond of the horse-size canines and I don't fancy trying to take something taller than me for a w-a-l-k.} Scout and Daisy are adorable and that Diana's one mighty fine Goddess. There should be more like her. Thanks as always, Margaret!

I adore cats because they are nearer to me in behaviour (and now you know what a bad behaviour I have :-D), but dogs are so cute. I really can't understand people who are not charmed by a dog's affection and enthusiasm. They're like eternal children. Curious, loving, full of affection...
To know that they have their goddess... they truly deserve one!

This site makes me depressed.

I had a long discussion with both of my "girls" this morning about adopting the Diana theme...We had been searching for new inspirations! lol! They send their thanks (and an extra bone shaped cookie).

Scout is adorable, isn't it amazing how a pup can sit and pose for a camera shot then run like a mad villian uncontrollably? Or maybe thats just my two mental pooches.

Brand new to this site, but I really like your blog...do you know of any gods who encourage "smart love"...I am starting to think I can only practice "stupid love"...wrong man, wrong intentions...wrong everything!

Jean: Re the heat. It's pretty miserable isn't it. We're sweltering over here.

Leslie: Thanks for the visit, and I agree. She is gorgeous.

Silkn: I'll put you in the queue. Thanks for the visit.

Shell: My hubby is allergic to cats, so no felines for us. But we are devoted to our dog, who is only about 20 pounds so she's not that big.

Myself: Cats are good too. My daughter is more of a cat person -- in behavior as well.

Andrew: So sorry you are depressed. Luckily there are many great sites to visit. So you don't have to get depressed visiting mine.

Lollie: I'll pass along the cookie to Scout.

Chrys: No, my dog is definitely like that too.

Anne: Smart love. I'm on it. Your in the queue.

Of course! The only lesson to be learnt is to be careful what you train your canines to do ;). Nothing much to be done about the immortals and their unforgiving ways!
