Joyology 101

Cover of "Long Way Round"Cover of Long Way Round

No time for wise women today.

Instead, let's talk joyology. Let's talk the study and cultivation of joy. This weekend, joy comes from tea with friends (very good for the soul and the spirit) and from settling down to watch "The Long Way Round," an 8-episode documentary chronicling Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman's motorcycle trek around the world.

Have you seen this show? Fun. Fun. Fun. Think Ewan being serenaded by gun-wielding Russian mafiosas. Think Ewan dining on sheep balls. Think Ewan splattered in mud. Think Ewan -- and his butt -- bathing in icy rivers. And he hasn't even made it out of Mongolia yet!

(P.S. I think Ewan might be my new secret boyfriend. Don't tell Colin.)

Ok. That's me. How are you cultivating joy this weekend?

This morning I was sitting in my kitchen, sipping coffee, eating cereal and fruit. Dog was at my feet and cat was on my lap. It suddenly hit me that I felt joyful, and I spent the rest of the morning embracing that feeling.

Why can't I have more of these moments?

We're actually taking a ride to the beach, spending a cold January afternoon walking alongside the sea. The New England beaches in winter are so beautiful, so different from summer. So seaside joy going on here.

Cultivating by reading your blog :)

I think I may have seen a small portion of this video once. Is there a time when Ewan plays the guitar and sings? He's so perfect. And he's mine!

I had a beautiful looong walk on the beach today and tonight my husband cooks and opens a bottle of red wine to go with. This makes me joyful. Tomorrow, even better, I will treat my sand and shell abused feet to a pedicure.

I wrote. I'm not sure if that (always) equals joy, but I do know that not writing always equals the opposite of joy.

So.

Susan: I love those sudden moments of quiet when all seems right with the world.

Joanne: I've never been to an east coast beach. Sounds lovely.

Inky: How dare you still my secret boyfriend!

Olga: I husband who cooks. That's the very definition of joy.

Linda: I know what you mean.

We're going to an Irish pub to hear my favorite band, Dublin 4.

The drummer was my bodhran (Irish frame drum) teacher. Irish music, for me, is pure joy!

Every day is Wise Woman day on your blog, Margaret.

I'm going to chill out as opposed to freak out. That's my whole plan.

I have a deep craving for Chinese food for a week now so to fill it we are going as a family to Chinese Lunch on Sunday.MMM Food & Family that's joyful.
And I worked so hard this week my arms are killing me so just sitting here by the wood stove with coffee in hand is pretty darn joyful too.

I remember seeing something about this ~ probably a documentary on the filming of the documentary. It did look like fun, and Ewan is a bonny laddy. I started my weekend with breakfast with one of my girlfriends, and have been happily pottering at home all day. That' a joyful day for me. Have a lovely weekend, Margaret!

A drive up the 101 to Santa Ynez at sunset last night and back this morning . . . hadn't been looking forward to it, but found myself really enjoying the beauty of the coastline.

I had to think about how to cultivate joy. In the end I asked for help from the husband, and was pleasantly surprised when he took Sunday off, spent the day with us, and helped me cultivate joy. :)

OMG: Apparently, there's a sequel. "The Long Way Down" They trek from Scotland to the southern tip of Africa. Can hardly wait.

It seems like we all tried to find a little joy this weekend. Well done, ladies.

Dez: waiting for details...

Coppertop: I love that you had to think about this and that your husband was able to take Sunday off. Fantastic.
