Goddess of the Week: Bast

Tick, tick, tick.  Time.  There it goes, slipping away.  Oops! Some more passed just there.  Ah-- and some more.

Are you an ant and never a grasshopper?  Are you so busying doing what you should do that you never do what you want to do?  If so, then the goddess for you is Bast.

Like our last goddess she is an Egyptian of the feline persuasion.  She has the body of a woman and the head of a cat.  She used to have the head of a lion and rule over the sun, but, alas, in a disturbing power struggle, she got saddled with the mere moon and her head was literally downsized.  But there is no use mewing over spilt milk.  You can move on or you can wallow, and Bast doesn't wallow.  Bast plays.  She has a good time.  She knows that in a world of shoulds and oughts and musts, fun and pleasure are the weapons of revolutionaries.  Gods and man may take your mane, but they sure as hell can't take your moxie.  Only you can sacrifice that.  Don't do it.  Don't "find time" to do the things you want.  Take time.  Steal time.  Kill the shoulds.  Drown them in bubble baths.  Bury them under good books.  Stitch them up with colorful embroidery floss and then burn them with those little creme brulee torches.  Be like Bast.  Stick it to the man.  Play.

Channel this goddess: when overwhelmed by errands, laundry, dirty dishes and that little voice in your head that always tells you to work harder, go faster, get more done.  The clock is ticking.  Don't waste it pushing a vacuum.

Petrea: This one is for you.

Anybody want to be next?

I love it when you "stick it to the man"!

MFA, I think you're right about Petrea. She wouldn't mind sticking it 2 de man - despite any protestations to de contrary.
However, I always thought it was the other way around: man sticking it to the woman. Well, maybe this K9 has more to learn bout your peculiar species.

wait--you can't claim Bast if you already leave the vacuuming to read the book?

This post has shed a light on one of my shortcomings, but not the one you'd think. You see, I'm either all play and no work OR all work and no play, but seldom find the middle ground.

Is there a goddess of balance?

I like the sound of this one, Margaret! And suddenly I want one of those little creme brulee torches...

Jean: Well, I really like to read so for me a book is fun and vacuuming is soul-sucking torture. Also, vacuums are very loud. I hate that.

Susan: Goddess of balance. I'm on it. Check back next week.

Shell: I want one of those little torches too, but I fear I can't be trusted with one.

Thank you, Margaret!!!!!!!!!

John and I were on an errand today and I saw something that made me think of you. I thought, "Oh, I shouldn't, it's frivolous." Then I thought, "I want to give it to Margaret so I'm buying it." And I did. I have two things for you. Two silly things.

Then I was heading to the laundry room WITH THE LAUNDRY BASKET and I thought it would be more fun to see if you had a new post.

Bast! Forget the laundry, I'm going to sit in the sun and do some channeling.

Ohh, I need this one. School's out in two weeks and this is what summer should be all about . . . playing in the sun and sticking it to the man.

Enjoy your goddess Petrea. You might come across Julie Newmar while your channeling. Puuurfect

Margaret,

Bastet is my favorite of the goddess' (outside of my new best friend Sekhmet). I actually took out a US copy-write on "Bastet's Garden" A garden I created with the help of a bunch of other artist. I later found out that at the turn of the century the English took tons of mummified cats found in the land of ancient Bubastis and had them shipped back and ground into fertilizer for their english gardens.

Not everyone is fond of cats

Drown the shoulds in bubble baths.
Yeah baby!
Meek voice: can I, too, have a goddess, pretty please?

PA, your goddess did well by you; I'm hoping mine helps me out, too. So far, she guided me to take down the "follow me on Twitter" thingy on my blog, so I feel less obligated to Tweet. I may take down my Facebook page. Woohoo!

Bast is short for basta?

P, glad u took down the twitter, otherwise I was gonna read up about the Goddess Twitter. However, I mite Twitter soon, on my blog!
Then, I'll get back to life & try to have a Blast.

Petrea..
I'm tellin ya, those cat goddess' are strong lunar signs.

If you figure out how to get off Facebook "poke me" and let me know how you do it.

PA, can't I just cancel the account?

I haven't decided yet. I keep thinking maybe I'll need it for something.

I needed Bast today and almost forgot to channel her. I'm working on making her my new habit.

Petrea: I'm glad you have adopted Bast. I think we all should. I actually need to myself. I've been remiss in just about everything these days because my daughter has been sick all week with migraines. Poor thing. As luck would have it, they are pretty common in people with epilepsy, as if that isn't enough to struggle with.

Petrea Burchard said...

Poor thing. Migraines are the worst. Neurologists prescribe anti-seizure drugs (topiramates) in small doses to non-epileptics to prevent migraines. They sort of work for some people. I hope she feels better soon.

Margaret said...

Dez: Of course, you must have a goddess. But I need information. What do you want your goddess to do for you?

Cafe Pasadena said...

Per Restless Dez: "Pay for all my eating out meals."

I love your writing! This one was particularly excellent.

Barbra: Thank you.

It's so hard to choose a goddess. I'm reading all your previous posts, one by one, and each time I find something helpful (duh!). I've always loved Bast because she's a cat (what divine animals!), but now I love her even more, after your description. Thanks! I feel a new needlepoint design forming, to substitute the little adored, but broken (sniff!) statue from the Met.

P.S., since you mentioned embroidery in this post, may I mention my "share-the-passion-non-commercial" blog about needlepointing? Thanks! Ars acupicturae stellae - Star's Needlepoint Art, http://arsacupicturaestellae.blogspot.com
