Goddess of the Week: Laverna

Petrea says that Desiree needs a goddess "because she has to do everything." That may be true, but I have a feeling that Desiree doesn't want a goddess for everything. She wants a goddess of mystery and intrigue because, well, Desiree likes to write about mystery and intrigue. That being the case, Desiree gets Laverna, the Roman goddess of thieves, cheats, and the deep, dark underworld.

Originally, Laverna was a death goddess (possibly the Etruscan goddess Furina.) But a goddess has to keep up with the times, just like the rest of us. She's got to contend with technology, trends, social media. These day, if she doesn't have a Twitter account she slides silently into legend.

Luckily, Laverna had it easier. When it became clear that death goddesses just weren't to die for anymore, she did a little horizontal integration and expanded her product line to cover cheats, thieves and pickpockets, always an under-served yet resilient market. Apparently, she had a sacred grove where the lawless could hide their pilfered booty. Boy, would some enterprising archeologist like to uncover that!

Also, apparently, she had no head. Which makes you wonder where she kept her conscience. Hmmm.

Desiree's new ebook deals with all things Laverna: cheating. Thieving. The criminal underworld. It's called Human Cargo. Don't you love the cover? Go ahead: judge this book by its cover. It promises to be just as good because it's by Desiree, and she's a great writer. Buy it here. I do not have a fancy e-reader, but I'm going to read it on my old laptop. I can do that right? (I'm sliding people. I'm sliding.)

Need a goddess: I got goddesses! Post a comment! Tell me what you need! Tell me what you want! I'll find you the goddess to make it happen! And it's free, free, free!!!

Why, yes you can read it on your laptop! Or iPhone, iTouch, Droid or Blackberry. Simply go to Amazon or Barnes&Noble and download the Kindle for PC or Nook for PC apps (depending on where you buy the book) and you're good to go. Easy peasy.

And, hey, I could really use a goddess! Got anything to help me not forget to pursue my own writing while I build my press? Like maybe a goddess who can create more time each day? That would be awesome!

Margaret, I'm requesting a goddess ... for YOU! I'd like to read about a technology goddess who convinces you to buy an ereader, soon. :)

I can see Restless Des with this goddess. Even the name Human Cargo suggests Laverne & RC. She's a tough goddess but someone has to take her.

Whoo hooo! I feel so lucky!!! A book, a goddess, and friends!!!

Did I request that goddess for Des? (I thought I requested it for me, but I'm happy to share.)

Laverna is perfect for our mysterious, marvelous Desiree.

You can get a free kindle on an iPhone, I believe. Not sure about the other formats.

I was so giddy to read this post I couldn't read it closely. So, she had no head? What a perfect match for the cover. How do you DO this?

I also admire her flexibility and ingenuity.

Woot, how exciting! Congratulations, Desiree. And Margaret, what a fitting goddess for the occasion. I think I need to look seriously at my horizontal integration, which I suspect is sorely lacking.

Cindie: Good to know about the laptop. As for your goddess, I'm on it!

Joanne: You think I should buy one, huh? Do you really like yours? I'm not opposed. I just don't want to spend the money. You think it's a good investment?

CP: She is tough, tough enough for thieves and cheats.

Petrea: You did request her? I thought I got you yours. Do you want another? Alas, my hubby has an iPhone. I do not.

Dez: I don't know for sure that she actually had no head, but she is represented as headless, so, yet, your cover is perfect. Your cover artist must have been channeling Laverna. (Hmmm. That might give you pause.)

No, no, you've gotten me plenty of goddesses. I'm just a glutton. I'll ask again when I'm desperate.

Hoorah! Although, I must say Dez had to jump through some serious hoops in order to finally squeeze a goddess out of Margaret.

I love horizontal integration! ;-)

Congratulations Desiree. A goddess with Etruscan roots. Now that is mysterious

Congrats to Desiree!

So, what is the process for requesting a goddess??? I sure could use one. Is there one for a Mid-Career crisis?

Margaret said...

Petrea: That's what I like about your: you're a glutton.

...Daisy...: You and Shell! I think you gals are thinking naughty thoughts.

Shanna: All you have to do is make a request! And you did. I'll find you what you need.

And thank you for promptly answering my call to get on the Restless Tour PR train, MF!

Congratulations, Desiree!

I haven't abandoned paper for reading yet, so I feel a bit left out. Actually, my computer is giving me enough aggravation that it's the thing that is endangered around here.

Congratulations Des! This looks good. And, I too am e-reader deficient (but hopeful - birthday coming up!)

This looks like a great book and I love the Goddess - Etruscan, no less. Wow...

I believe you can purchase a pdf on Smashwords and print it out. I've done that before.

An awesome plug for your friend's book and I love that you combined it with a goddess...oh so clever of you, Margaret.

And I DO love the cover and the title of her book. She is a clever girl as well.

That is a very cool cover, and after checking out Desiree's site I'm already hooked. I'm excited to read another local author. I'm just about finished with Michelle Huneven's "Blame," which you also recommended. It's like one-stop shopping here: books and goddesses. How great is that?!

Congrats to Desiree! I DO love the cover. I haven't caved to the e-reader as yet either ;)
