Goddess of the Week: Pasithea

Newly-retired Ann needs a goddess that will help her plan and enjoy her downtime. She needs the Greek goddess of relaxation, Pasithea.

There is not a lot known about Pasithea. She was one of the Charities and, like the rest of them, she hung out with Aphrodite. She was also married to Hypnos, the god of sleep. That may not be a lot of information, but it's actually tells you all you need to know: Relaxation comes from friends, love, and a good night's sleep.

If you want to plan and enjoy your downtime, therefore, it is very simple: You need to plan time for friends, love and sleep--and don't skimp on the sleep. We are a sleep-deprived nation. We've been sold a bill of goods that tells us that happiness comes from Red Bull moments and robot-like productivity. All lies! Be counter cultural: clear your calendar and go to bed early.

Channel this goddess: When feeling rushed, when overwhelmed with things to do, when you don't even remember what downtime looks like, when you just need to treat your own beloved body better.

Need a goddess: I got goddesses! Post a comment explaining what you need or want a goddess for. Then check back in a couple weeks and see what you got! It's fun! It's free! But, really, it's not worth losing sleep over.

Happy Retirement Ann! It's a wonderful place to "Be", to enjoy friends, and yes, to rest.

I retired early because the stress of my job was resulting in sleep deprivation that was pretty much making me crazy (well, other factors thrown in--like dealing with amother with dementia). Anyway, I now realizethat a goddess was at work in my life when I realized I needed to leave my job much more than I needed to stay.

I'd throw in, find something you are passionate about, for the hours you are awake.

I was thinking that, too, Jean. I'm not retired but I freelance, and I have a good gig that leaves me lots of free time. I've filled every minute with projects of passion. It's a second career, a career of joy.

I could use more sleep and more time for passion projects. I think it might be time for me to retire... or maybe freelance? I'll think about it tomorrow. Tonight I'm going to bed blissfully early.

I'm a restless sleeper, so will channel Pasithea.

I love sleeping! Pasithea must have something to do with it.

You don't happen to have a Goddess who can juggle a father in hospital and a house move for said father and mother in the same week?

It's like you wrote this for me, except for the part about retirement. Lately, I've been acquiring detailed knowledge about the informercials that come one in the middle of the night, that sell you things to help you sleep. I now own something called the MyPillow. Too bad I didn't just get a goddess instead. :)

The best part of retirement is not having to get up until you're good and ready!!!
